Carbonaie 2015 IGT Toscana - Il Drago e La Fornace
SILVER - MUNDUS VINI, I MIGLIORI VINI ITALIANI - LUCA MARONI
The Carbonaie vineyards are located on the hillside called Vigna del Noce, where two ancient furnaces (carbonaie) were built on top of the hills to the West of the estate around the 11th century.
Winemaker's Notes: Made from 100% Sangiovese, this wine is aged 16-18 months in French barriques, and left in the bottle for additional 6 months before release. Deep dark ruby colour with intense aromas of ripe fruits and good structure, followed with an elegant and complex finish. Perfect with red and game meats, including tartare and other related dishes.
MICHAEL GODEL, WINE ALIGN:
"A sangiovese unlike most others from Azienda Agricola Pocci Pietro Mattia in Tuscany's Colle di Val d'Elsa. The area is in Siena province, west of Chianti Classico, just up from Monteriggioni en route to San Gimignano. Knowing Dante's connection with Monteriggioni this Carbonaie label called "The Dragon And The Furnace" is likely a doomsday Italian bard's reference to a hellish stand-off between a beast and his unfortunate circumstances. The sangiovese is exactly the opposite; plum and berry fruit concentrated, on the right side of Ribena, lithe, lightly sappy, cool, ethereal. Clearly a vineyard in the valley with a prominent place, exceptional exposure and the ability to gift a sense of grace. Not a dramatic or vivid wine but one of calm and a drift into elysium. Sorry Dante, irony's a bitch. Drink 2021-2027. Tasted August 2020". 93 Points
DAVID LAWRASON, WINE ALIGN:
"Wow - now here's a pretty and amazing wine. You have to like cassis vermouthy ribina (which I do) because that it is by far the dominant aroma and flavour. But there is other complexity with pepper, evergreen and fine oak spicing. It is full bodied, rich yet very refined and smooth and opulent, with a great core of blackcurrant fruit and fine feathery tannin. Very sophisticated and seductive stuff, if not particulary Tuscan if its regionality that you seek. The length is outstanding. Tasted August 2020". 95 Points
